History
Yuri Gagarins trip into space lasted just one day and included one revolution around the planet. Upon his return, he became a national hero in the Soviet Union. He was given countless awards and military medals. He was elected to both the lower and upper levels of the Soviet Unions Soviet Supreme. He was set as a backup to the Soyuz 1 crew in 1967, but its fatal crash that killed his friend Vladimir Komarov resulted in the Soviet government benching Gagarin from any future spaceflights. The government and the Soviet space program didnt want to risk a black eye in losing a national hero in another failed space mission.
