"Founders: Montesquieu - Separation of Powers"

Many U.S. Founding Fathers considered the separation of powers to be among the most important principles for maintaining freedom. As James Madison put it, "Ambition must be made to counteract ambition." In this way, government accountability is enhanced.

  • Contains 1 AVDP oz of .999 fine Copper.
  • Each round comes in protective packaging. Multiples of 20 come in plastic tubes.
  • Obverse: Features an artistic rendering of Montesquieu by celebrated coin designer Joel Iskowitz.

Montesquieu and Separation of Powers
Division of governmental authority among the various branches or levels of government is known as the "separation of powers" principle. Separation of powers exists to prevent any branch or level of government from acquiring an excessive amount of authority, which could result in abuse and corruption. Instead, several parts or levels of government are intended to act as checks and balances against one another, preventing any single faction from gaining excessive control.

Montesquieu, a French political philosopher and judge, introduced the idea of separation of powers in the 18th century. Montesquieu felt that maintaining liberty and averting tyranny required division between the executive, legislative and judicial branches of government. He stated that it would be simple for one individual or group to abuse their power and oppress the populace if all the government's authority was concentrated into a single governing body.

The Founding Fathers of the United States were heavily influenced by Montesquieu and therefore they established the legislative, executive and judicial branches of government within the U.S. to be granted specific and limited powers. Making laws is the responsibility of the legislative branch, enforcing them is the executive branch, and interpreting them is the judicial branch. This division of powers aids in preventing the emergence of concentrated tyrannical authority within the government. Other democratic governments around the world have also been influenced by Montesquieu's theories on the separation of powers, and have all since embraced this philosophy in various forms.

Founders of Liberty
Founders of Liberty is a unique series of rounds exclusively from APMEX that celebrate the ideas that make freedom possible. These ideas are depicted with symbolic representations on the reverse of each round while the obverse displays a historical figure who either developed the concept or was chosen as the idea's best representative. These rounds feature prominent voices for liberty, including U.S. Founding Fathers and the men they looked to for inspiration.

Each release in the series features a collectible limited mintage antique round with a special display box and certificate of authenticity alongside unlimited bullion investment rounds of the same design. These bullion rounds can also be acquired in special tamper-evident packaging which is a great alternative to the antique display round if its limited mintages sell out before you can order.
