History tells the tale of the brave King Leonidas, leader of the Spartan kingdom within Greece. Leonidas and his men were fearsome warriors raised from birth to fight and win for the cause of Sparta and greater Greece. When the Persian Empire with its army numbering in the thousands threatened to invade Greece, it was Leonidas and 300 of his bravest men who marched out to stall the Persians for days.

On the obverse of the 1 oz Molon Labe Silver Round is the image of a Spartan soldier with helmet, armor, cape, and a long spear standing ready to fight to the death with the Persians. Hopelessly outnumbered, Leonidas refused to step aside and allow the Persian armies to march through to Greece. Though he would lose the battle, his men fought valiantly and reportedly told the Persians when asked to relinquish their weapons and step aside Molon Labe.

The phrase Molon Labe comes from the ancient Greek language and means come and take them. The phrase is reported to have been uttered by Leonidas to the Persian ruler Xerxes I when he demanded the surrender of the Spartan warriors.

The reverse side of the 1 oz Molon Labe Silver Rounds includes the logo for the Intaglio Mint. The logo is set in the center of the design field on a background that features a radial burst with a stippled border around the design field. Engravings of the weight, purity, and metal content are included.
