The recreational use of cannabis was officially prohibited in 1931 by the state of Illinois. This was part of a national shift involving 29 states establishing anti-cannabis laws. The Cannabis Control Act of 1978 moved to push Illinois towards the legalization of cannabis, yet to take effect it needed approval from Human Services and the State Police. Neither group responded to the act. Recreational cannabis use was finally signed into law on June 25^th, 2019, taking full effect across the state on January 1, 2020.

This symbolic image represents cannabis restrictions that have been pervasive across the United States for decades.
