Akhenaten, originally named Amenhotep IV, ruled Egypt during the 18th Dynasty, from approximately 1353 to 1336 BCE. Born to Pharaoh Amenhotep III and Queen Tiye, he ascended to the throne and initially continued the traditional religious practices of Egypt. However, in the fifth year of his reign, he initiated a religious revolution that would dramatically alter Egyptian society and culture.

Akhenaten is best known for abandoning Egypt's traditional polytheistic religion in favor of monotheism, centered on the worship of the Aten, the sun disk. This radical shift included:

1. Changing his name from Amenhotep IV ("Amun is satisfied") to Akhenaten ("Effective for Aten")
2. Moving the capital from Thebes to a new city, Akhetaten (modern-day Amarna)
3. Suppressing the cult of Amun and other traditional deities
4. Introducing a new, more naturalistic art style that departed from rigid Egyptian conventions

His reign also saw significant changes in diplomacy, as evidenced by the Amarna Letters, a cache of diplomatic correspondence discovered at Akhetaten.
