The history of snowmen dates back much farther than most people might realize. One of the first photographs of a snowman ever taken was snapped around 1853. This early depiction showed two individuals building a snowman and was taken by a Welsh photographer by the name of Mary Dillwyn.

However, written references of snowmen date back even further than 1853. Artistic depictions in museums, art galleries, and libraries in Europe suggest that snowmen originated during the Middle Ages, or at the very least, were already commonplace by then. One of the earliest known depictions of a snowman is actually from a doodle in the margins of a book from 1380 that is currently held in a library in The Hague.
