Oregon was among a number of states in 1974 and 1975 to join a movement to decriminalize the possession of marijuana. In most of these states, the move merely made it possible for residents to possess up to one ounce of cannabis. In 1986 and 2012, ballot measures to legalize cannabis were put before the voters in Oregon, but did not gain approval in either attempt. The passage of Measure 91 in 2014 finally gained voter approval.
