After the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted the series in 2020, it returns in 2021 with the second of four designs planned for the collection. It is said that Roman armies planted chestnuts throughout the European continent while expanding the empire, spreading the species of tree from the beech family across several nations. Included in the design is the fruit of the chestnut tree.

The reverse face of the 2021 1 oz Germania Chestnut Leaf Silver Round comes with the two-headed eagle. This symbol comes from Roman mythology and was associated with the god Janus, the guardian of doors, gates, and other passageways. The two-headed eagle has been adopted by countless empires over the course of human history, including the Romans, as a symbol of past and present. The heads look in opposing directions to symbolize respect for the past and hope for the future.
