Blackbeard was English by birth and born as Edward Teach in Bristol, England, around the year 1680. Little is known about his early life in England, but it is widely accepted that he served either in the British Royal Navy or as a privateer on other commissioned ships during the Queen Annes War, a conflict that Europeans consider a theater within the broader War of the Spanish Succession that raged in Europe from 1701 to 1714.

The obverse face of these 1 oz Blackbeard Silver Rounds includes a depiction of Blackbeard as he is believed to have dressed throughout his piratical life. With a steely gaze, his long beard flows down his face and you can see the lit fuses he used to keep woven into his hair and tucked up under his hat.

Blackbeard menaced the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic seaboard of the British American Colonies in North America for just two years from 1716 to 1718, but few pirates were more successful in longer careers than Blackbeard was in his short time. One of his greatest achievements was the formation of a pirate alliance that managed to blockade the vital port town of Charles Town, South Carolina, where he was able to eventually ransom the inhabitants of the port.

On the reverse side of 1 oz Blackbeard Silver Rounds, you will find a replication of Blackbeards flag. His success relied on striking fear in his opponents before ever getting face-to-face with them. His pirate flag featured a skeleton raising a glass to toast the devil while it sought to drive a spear through a heart.
